Appearance

Leonti is on the tall side for his heritage and quite muscular from all of his training. His fur is thick and coarse, especially long in a mane around his neck and his fluffy, fox-like tail. When allowed to grow, his pelt is generally long; however, Leonti keeps the fur on his throat, legs, and side cut as short as he possibly can using a knife. This is for two reasons. The first is self expression - Leonti believes that the shorter fur makes him look less like a child. However, the haircut has a practical reason as well; having less fur to slide around on makes his armor stay on better and keeps him from overheating during intense physical activity. His longer fur is often braided to keep it out of the way; the most visible of these are two large braids in his mane.

He takes after both of his parents in his coloring – vivid oranges and browns, the colors of fire and autumn. Traditional fox and wolf markings mix together on his pelt, accented by golden bioluminescent markings that flicker and glow like sparks. His paw-pads and tail-tip also glow; the latter of these has earned him the affectionate nickname ‘Firefly’.

Inventory

As a Sterkur, Leonti often finds himself in various physical altercations; due to this, he uses armor to keep himself safe. Constructed from wood, leather, and rabbit furs to pad it, Leonti’s armor is painted and dyed gray and stays on his body with the help of a harness and a series of carefully planned out straps. Sun symbols referencing his family name and triangles for detail adorn the otherwise plain surfaces. The harness affords numerous spots where Leonti can attach more armor to protect his flank and throat if he wishes, but for day to day wear he chooses to guard his shoulder, flank, and legs – the three spots most likely to get scratched during a battle.

Leonti views his armor like a protective shell against the world. It doesn’t just serve a practical function for him, but comforts him as well, and as such he rarely ever takes it off – even when sleeping.

Leonti is an excellent Sterkur - strong, quick on his feet, practical, and obedient. A natural guardian, he falls into his role with ease; during battles his determination to win often pushes him through to victory. A naturally competitive fighter, Leonti enjoys the training aspects of his job in a way not all of his coworkers appreciate. He finds sparring and contests of strength fun due to the low stakes behind them; even if losing is disappointing, it doesn’t mean having to let go of something you care about. His protective, persistent, and competitive natures all make him a formidable foe in a way his physical strength or intelligence could never accomplish - no matter the odds, if he needs to protect someone, Leonti refuses to give up until either he or the opponent is dead.

While this personality type is not uncommon among Sterkur, the reasons for its existence in Leonti hide a darker reality. He views protecting others – especially his family and pack - as his responsibility even more so than any of his coworkers’ and is willing to put his life and safety on the line at a moment’s notice to accomplish that. To him, even one injury or death that he couldn’t save someone from is a mark of failure on his end. Leonti spends much of his free time, even outside of battles and sparring, pushing himself as much as possible so that he can deal with any threat. The thought of ‘failing’ gives him intense anxiety that he tries to assuage in any way, even compulsively. He failed at his duty once; he refuses to let it happen again if he can help it at all.

Hercules beetle

she/her

Stubborn and no-nonsense, Aegis – who glows orange – has made it her goal to take care of Leonti with the same fierce determination he uses to take care of others. Whether it’s making sure he’s eaten that day, simply providing a listening ear, or admonishing him for being too hard on himself, Aegis refuses to let Leonti suffer. Much like her bond-partner, she also has a powerful moral code that can sometimes lead her to butt heads with Leonti.

Relationships

Aeslyn
Leonti’s mom. He wants to always be there for her, but it can be hard helping her with her grief when he’s going through the same thing himself with little idea on how to solve it. He shows his love in more achievable ways, such as making sure she’s safe during dangerous situations.
Catreus Sunspeaker
Leonti’s father. He doesn’t know much about Catreus, only that he disappeared right before the triplets were born. The family has no idea if he’s alive or dead, and although Leonti can see how much his absence has affected Aeslyn, he struggles to feel the same.
Basil Sunspeaker
Probably the canine Leonti is most protective of. He would die before he let Basil get hurt, and at any chance Leonti is hovering near him, ready to leap into action at the slightest threat. It’s not healthy, but he’s convinced that if he shirks his ‘duty’ to protect Basil, something awful will happen.
Alucard Sunspeaker
Leonti’s deceased brother. He feels incredible guilt over Alucard’s death; for two years following his death he hallucinated Alucard’s ghost watching him all of the time. However, Leonti is finally taking the steps to move on and hopes that Alucard can finally be truly allowed to rest.

History

The Beginning

Leonti, along with his brothers Basil and Alucard, was born to Aeslyn in the beginning of winter. From the beginning, his personality always bordered on deep anxiety; as the most responsible and cautious of the three, he was often the one pulling them back from trouble. But as the triplets got older, more capable, and more curious about the world, it was inevitable that they would eventually sneak out of Heimili one way or the other.

During one snowy afternoon, that time finally came. Alucard was the first to venture out, challenging his younger brothers to follow. Leonti didn’t want to go – the adults had successfully drilled into his head that the world outside of the Heimili was a dangerous place – but he felt like he needed to make sure his brothers were safe, so he followed. Unknown to all three of them, something was stalking them - an Arí.

The Arí pounced on Alucard faster than Basil or Leonti could react. In a matter of seconds, their brother that had been so vibrant and fearless was torn to pieces. Leonti would replay that event in his head over and over, trying to find something he could have done differently. Maybe he could have been more persistent with getting his brothers to come back to the Heimili, or not let Alucard separate from the group… but no amount of overthinking would mend what had already been done.

In the weeks and months following Alucard’s death, Aeslyn and any canine that could be roughly described as a mental health professional focused on what had happened to Basil. As the result of having witnessed Alucard’s brutal death firsthand, Basil’s mind quite literally shattered. Suddenly, even though Basil seemed to be standing right in front of him, Leonti was talking to someone else; someone he would later learn was named “Odysseus”, an alter his brother had created to protect himself from the horrible truth. Seeing the consequences of his failure in protecting Alucard only pushed Leonti further into blaming himself.

He even began seeing Alucard’s ghost following him around, staring at him and always vanishing just before he could reach him. It was a special kind of agony to see Alucard stay a pup while Leonti grew tall and strong, made even worse by the fact that every time his brother appeared, he was bleeding from the wounds that had taken his life.

Leonti threw himself fully into training to be the best Sterkur he could possibly be to prevent something like Alucard’s death from ever happening again. He refused to settle for mediocrity, throwing himself into training session after training session without regard for rest nor preventing strain injuries. After all, in a real battle he wouldn’t get the chance to recover - he needed to learn to fight even through the pain. He told no one about Alucard’s ghost, but whenever he failed a training test, he could feel his brother’s sorrowful eyes on him - as if he was already being judged.

It all culminated one night when Leonti woke up to find Alucard standing nearby, staring at him. Suddenly, his feelings of guilt turned into white-hot anger - he was doing everything he could to protect his family; why couldn’t his brother just see that? Why was he always being held to an unattainable standard? He snapped, screaming at his brother’s ghost, until it turned and fled. Leonti chased it through the woods, determined to find out where it was going. He finally saw the ghost for what it was – not actually Alucard, but a hallucination.

It was a while before Leonti realized where he was being led. As soon as the trees stopped, he slammed into a stop, the location becoming instantly familiar. It was somewhere he’d avoided for months - the clearing where Alucard had died. And for the second time ever, the ghost spoke to him. It told him that it wasn’t his fault, and to protect Basil. Leonti descended into a sobbing mess. He never saw the ghost again.

Leonti’s mental condition has improved somewhat since that encounter. The toll of his brother’s death will never truly leave him in peace, but he’s finally taken the first step towards moving on.
